Self-inserting has always been a thing, however, more than ever has it not taken in an almost parasitic and viral infestation in general fandom and the BL scene.

Whether it's the need to make gay ships het by adding a vagina/transing, or blatantly stating they see non-insert ships as cucking, let's talk about self-inserting and how bad it's gotten.

KEKKK did you get these from LC? With the first one you can't win tho, they're trying to wokify their interest in the MC being gay because if they just ignored her they'd be called misogynists. There's no good way to approach it so these people have to complain and call it performative despite that their critique is also performative because they aren't making fan content. The second one is often true tho kek, esp for shonen ships. SasuSaku & NaruHina…

ngl, a little unrelated maybe but I've seen people describe male characters (usually the uke) the same way as the first post (even including the "wife") and I don't understand whether they're projecting as wanting to be the uke and be desired by the character they want to get fucked by or that they resent them for whatever reason (like oh what a shame character I like is gay but it's ok I can still self insert)

It's probably a mix of retarded fandomspeak plus thirsting after the character plus maybe self-insertion depending on the person like you said. Usually a focus on the seme being all over the uke

For those types of fujos the shipping comes off as wish-fulfillment (self-inserting/projecting onto the uke). It kind of reminds me of how people would pamper their self-insert OCs, make them Mary Sue's, give them the most intricate writing/details, etc. but the love interest OC would be very bland. Imo a lot of shipping nowadays is an extension of that.

I wish I was in y'all's fandoms because the ones I'm in do this to the seme… like everything revolves around the uke to the point it drives me crazy. In my fandom they actually are simping over the uke when they say that, and want to see him submissive, so the only way to do that is with a man. I think it is a bit of self-insertion as well but in the gender way but it is mainly simping since his character type is pretty beloved amongst fujos.

Why is self-inserting so common now? What will be the next trend in fandom 10 years from now?

 No.13761

Honestly, I don't consider these people shippers; they're yumes, if anything, and tourists, if you want to use that term. I predict that a lot of them will cool off and leave fandom by a decade from now, as AI characters and chatting become more commonplace. I also anticipate more things like LADS will draw them away as well.

I was literally about to post this and complain about it. The fact that so many people agree to it makes me sick.
It's one thing if there are traits of a character that you find sympathetic, or even "relatable" in some aspects, but another to straight up just self-project your experiences and behaviors onto that character wishing it to be (You) or making it just be a stand-in for (You). Be it the bottom or the top, what happened to just liking characters just because you do? I often feel like the average modern fandom person wouldn't tolerate literature because "the MC isn't relatable enough" or "it has proship material therefore it's bad"

 No.13765

I went through the QRTs of this and it made me seethe so bad kek. Self-inserters are the problem when it comes to shipping if anything. That's how you get retarded mischaracterization (XYZ character is ME, so if I'm essentially writing myself surely it can't be OOC) and fics where the other half has no personality and is just a megasimp for the glorified self-insert. I find it sad that there are some people who can't enjoy a relationship/story without seeing themself in it (beyond finding a character simply relatable), the fujocuck insults from hetfags and some yuripigs were very telling on how they engage with fiction.

I only self-inserted as an elementary kid and it was for a Minecraft character because he reminded me of a guy I liked IRL at the time, I still did like his ship tho and I separated my like of the ship from me shipping myself with him because I was very different from the FMC, so again I still don't get the phenomenon of self-inserting to pre-existing ships. It's bananas just make yume art and leave it out of the ship tags.

It is so annoying looking for art from a series just to see untagged yumeslop.

I know slop is heavily used now- but I don't understand how these posts get likes.

It's boring, it's ooc, and I can't block them all. Because why should I take any interest in what a mentally 9 year old woman thinks about her dumb crush. And worse, people will get mad at you for not indulging in it. I need them all to fuck off to some unseen corner of the web.

On 4chan at least it's just an attempt to insult an opposing party. The waifufags will call shippers "cucks" and rant about how they're emasculated by letting "their girl" get taken by someone else because "cuck" is the worst thing they can imagine. Ties back to the usual incel rhetorics and trying not to be the loser among losers.

I get that but as someone who likes "bland" MCs and torturing them to push them out of their nice / passive personality it gets annoying. Men do the aura farming, oh he's so effortlessly cool self-insert when in canon the guy's shaking like a newborn lamb and I'm like the wolf coming for the slaughter. And for FMCs it's like the oh she's so nice and forgiving and only acts vulnerable in front of her love interest when I like the moments where she's more selfish. If they want to fuck the love interest they should just do that directly, these mindgames don't make sense to me.

That's why it's hilarious watching these feminists on twitter also using the word "cuck" just like an incel would when they think a yaoi ship is taking away their husbando from their self-insert. We live in the worst reality.

 No.13893

Random yume aggression towards fujos comes off as sour grapes. Self-shipping is more like a larp you involve your friends in than actual shipping.

 No.13894

I think there are two types of self-insertion. First, and that's the crappy way, where the character becomes you. All the shitty fics where a character is bent and broken to be literally the writer, including their insecurity issues, sex, heritage and trans score belong to this category.

Secondly, you mentally become the character. At least for a while. Not in a "kinning" sense (and kinning belongs to type 1. IMO anyway), rather in a sense of rational understanding and empathy. If I obsess over a character I desire to be or rather think like him when I draw him or write from his PoV. I have to shed every trait of the real me that doesn't belong in there and imagine that I was him, with his interests and his issues to emulate canon.
I guess every writer does this to some degree, but if you want to do it well and really obsess over something you'll do this more intensely if you want your analysis to contain some canon-compliant depth (even if it's porn). It's fun because it's a bit like becoming someone else for a while which is inspiring as it is exciting. I think this is one of the core reasons for why I need fiction. I want to explore foreign minds that vaguely resonate with mine and try to see the world from their perspective and maybe even explore them further, past the boundaries of on-screen-shown canon.

I consider those self-insertions as polar opposites of each other and tbh I really hate the first type, because it erases canon and I am here for the canon. If I cared about type 1 I might just ship everything because my degree of empathy for a certain character wouldn't matter since I would force my own bullshit into him anyway.

This is also my issue with characters that are written as self-inserts (type 1). They're bland as fuck since they're supposed to be a blank sheet and only bear common traits that are attributed to commonly nice and commonly vulnerable people. Since there is nothing inside there is nothing to explore and develop. They're hollow to me.

Whenever I hear about "drama in the selfshipping community" on tiktok I'm like "isn't that just your friend group?" but I guess a lot of girls will purposefully go out of their way to harass girls who have the same husbando as them kek.

 No.13906

I don’t think your type 2 really counts as self insertion at all, its just what writers have to do if they want to write anything worth reading. It’s just empathy.

Even in a friend group I'd get bored if I had to hear about how much the character was only their husband and the conversation going back to self-insert fantasies. It's not interesting to anyone but the yume.

>days later drops all pretenses and start posting about about converting yaoi boys with pov self insert porn

Best self-report.
I personally would never imagine myself with a character in a yaoi ship or even a canon gay adjacent character, but if they find the conversion idea hot, to each their own. Though hopefully they are all ok with sharing yumes, because from what i know non-sharing yumes sometimes block yumes with their favorite husbandos.

Kids who don't have a friend group for it branch out to external groups to find people to talk at, and social media algorithms will then pass their public posts to anyone else also looking at selfship posts. The latter is how some random teenager can fall out with two irl friends and end up with 40 hate messages from strangers on the internet.

>>13906
I agree, but I get why they'd think it. I've had people tell me that was selfinserting and I was no better than what they describe as type 1, and I think imagining stuff from the POV of characters is generally shamed by fujo spaces at the moment for being too close to either selfinsertion or somehow making the guy a woman allegory. People have always been afraid of fulfilling the stereotype of fujoshi writing uke as surrogate women, and now selfinsertion accusations are common it makes them reexamine every part of their engagement with media even when it doesn't need to be. Male fandom spaces will shit talk escapism too so good luck wanting to take time to be someone else who doesn't resemble your shitty life.

For me it's worth remembering that empathy means you're not confined to one character. You might play favorites but you'll still want to see that favorite from another character's perspective because it's more of your favorite. If you're writing a ship you'll want to think about how either side is feeling and what motivates their actions. You'll jump in and out of whoever you need or enjoy seeing through, and you might rub off some of your personal beliefs on them as happens because you're human, but you aren't committed to just one character. There's no absolute and you aren't isolated from exploring others. Bad ship material can be born from not empathizing with a character enough and focusing too much on the other, but I still believe that's a skill issue coming from inexperienced creatives just as often as people accuse it of being selfinsertion.

>>13913
Seriously any discord server I've been in that had a channel for yume talk would always have drama where someone got upset because other users wouldn't talk about their OC and that it was unfair that nobody gave them their share of the conversations. I personally would get riled up because you'd post stuff about canon characters and go days without a response while the yume channel got 300 new posts between people who were referencing stuff from their DMs that nobody else would know. When they shut down the server you just know it's because some yume wouldn't stop crying to the mods.

>>13919
Nonshares are just an excuse to throw a fit and get everyone to console them. Playground ass behavior. If someone interprets your fave differently from you just argue with them like a normal autist. Yume always shut up when I point to canon evidence.

 No.13931

The conversation was kinda funny because it got a lot of them to admit they liked the designs of the yaoi characters and yet many of them will not support sub!male works which is what they can blame for the lack of them. Which is probably the real issue at hand, yume culture often involves the typical hetcoom dynamic and yet many of them crave the kind of soft-boy that is a old-school stereotypical uke: will do chores w/o prompting, has to be goaded into sex (aka not a sex pest but still into you), very expressive etc. hence why so much of shipping involves projecting because they can't imagine Character A submitting to a female only a male. Even when sub!male works get published the woman is still sexualized to hell and the yumes who cannot be fujoyumes get frustrated and take it out on yaoi.

 No.13933

>>13931
How does that work considering how much they go off about how sub!males are "pseudo woman"?
Also came across anti yaoi threads on other sites too, it seems like any female oriented site nowadays that isn't fujo themed to begin with is going to lean into spamming hate about it, how depressing.

 No.13934

>>13932
To cope with the fact that they want those "pseudo females" and not the rapepigs. Why do you think they bash BL so much specifically because of it's lack of "realism"? Because that's the same reason internally they've given up on their sub!male dreams.

That is sad, but it's funny coming from men considering they're just upset the average male fan of male-oriented works is not active in fandom so they have to see their precious shonen-slop get homo'ed. Again, if they want shit to change they have to do it instead of seething about it.

I was in a NS yume server once out of support for my friend and the way it was structured was inconceivable to me. Everyone had their own channel to sperg out over their yumeship and people interacted with each other kind of like fans or mainly engaged with someone's yumeship expecting interaction back in return. Even then, when liking someone's yumeship you can't go "all out" like you would a normal OTP because some of the yumes would be extremely picky about interpretations and whatnot. At most you just make generic pretty fanart for a yumeship you like and that's it kek. This is what killed every friendship I had with yume. I like writing cute scenarios for ships so I couldn't help suggesting similar things for their selfships, and no matter how much I knew the character/series they always had some "err no he would not do that" comeback at me. Felt really bad because I was trying to be positive and play along.

A channel for every user is crazy though, just use the forum feature or threads. Guess it was so they could bar people from replying in some channels, or worse, keep sharers from seeing the other user existed.

I notice how stale their post contents are when I see them on 4chan. They always post the same two screenshots or same two solo fanarts (80% of the great fanart involves ships and the other 19.9% is solo art made by fujos whom yume usually block) and they never say anything but stuff like "my beloved [name]".

It's so boring. I think that even if I fantasized about fucking one of my favorite gay dudes in my head I would still crave BL art because simply because it depicts my husbando in a sexy role or pose or simply because it's pretty art of him. But they usually don't even do that. They just make the same posts ad infinitum and don't talk to anybody since everybody else is either a fujo or another self-shipper and therefore rival.

I also noticed that they never seem to post their husbandos in any specific or funny situations. It's always sterile, neutral art, usually some that only shows their face with a smile. I know there are other yume, but the ones on 4chan in particular act like they fell in love with statues.

Which board are you thinking of? I think the ones on /trash/ are more relaxed and veer into weird kinks, but the /a/ threads have a 10+ years long culture of tormenting anyone who doesn't completely sanitize their feelings and interest in their husbando/waifu. I got a bunch of shit for saying he could survive getting set fire to or blown apart in a blast and that I thought being an OP hero like that was hot. You have to virtue signal the living shit out of not wanting to see or be reminded of anything harmful or they'll harass you, in the 2010s they'd spam you with gore pics too, some of them custom made.

I really thought she stopped being active (last post was two months ago) but no she just has nothing to post/reblog because quite literally all the other people in this small-ass fandom who are active are fujos and she can only reblog from the occasional fandom tourist who goes "muhh this manga is about FRIENDSHIP you sick fucks" or someone who posts art of her husbando. I'm exaggerating when I say she's infamous because it is only known to me and 30 other people lol but she comments under other people's posts saying people are "abrasive" that their ship didn't become canon (no one's did, dip-shit) and says she hates her husbando's main ship bc it's adult x minor and everyone who ships it is gross and conveniently ignores the creator of her husbando literally has made BL doujinshi of a middle schooler (ish) being in a relationship with someone in their 20s lmao. She's reblogged all the posts she could find criticizing the fandom and there's barely any of them and so she's stuck reblogging official art where her husbando is literally holding hands with another guy.
