/ffs/ - Fujo Fandom Sperging

Tumblr nonas, I have a suggestion.
Now that communities are a thing, could we make one dedicated to only oldschool fanblogs?

Example ruleset:
-No posting about yourself. No pronouns in bio. No mental health in bio. You can do this off on your main blog, not on your fanblog. Fanblogs should be kept pure and enthusiastic.

-Members should embrace the oldschool fandom philosophy of 'don't like, don't read', 'fiction is not endorsement' and 'no minors allowed'

-No posting wildly alternate AU versions of characters. (Yes, this means we might have to axe coffee shop AUs, but it also means we don't have to deal with trans stuff, it also means history-based fans don't have to see modern AUs in a fanbase overrun with them)

That's not what I meant, nona. AUs that diverge from canon are fine, such as 'Character lives AU'.

'Wildly alternate' should refer to whole-setting AUs, such as coffee shops AU or Western AU, or changing an aspect of a character to be completely different from canon, such as 'AU for Evangelion where Asuka is a blob from outer space'.

This is mainly because I've been in fandoms where people seem very hesitant to interact with the OG setting, and prefer writing AUs instead, often while wiping away 'problematic' aspects of the series. This is not great when you really love that setting and want to see more of it.

Also, because it seemed like a plausible way to keep the trannies out without openly telling them to fuck off.

Either way, I welcome all points of view on this, feedback on what could be changed or how the rules should be worded, or if a rule seems strange it can be changed.

Maybe whole setting AUs are fine as long as it's fanart, not too often, and the characters are recognisably themselves?

-All blogs need to have a theme so that they can be seen on a computer and look different from when they're viewed on phone. Preferably navigable by a tags index. This filters out low-effort blogs.

I pingpong everywhere. I have the fortune of liking one current juggernaut ship and it is way more prolific on Twitter than tumblr. For whatever reason (Taste. It's taste.) jp fans like this ship while western fans for a time really preferred the "less problematic MLM" ship, lol. Using "MLM" over yaoi/slash/"m/m" is a red flag to me now. Most of my other fandom interests are too small/old to get a proper read on.

Don't be subtle about being a fujo. Make an effort to reach out first because we are all socially inept and/or once-bitten-twice-shy about stepping on a discourse landmine.

I hate discord specifically because you can't anonymously lurk, but understand that it's nice to have a gated community when fujo hostility is so high. I'm still sad about the tumblr porn ban because of the fandom diaspora it caused. I re-regged to aarinfantasy a while back but it's pretty slow and more BL than "fandom" focused. Twitter sucks shit but as long as that's where all the artists are there's nothing I can do. Bluesky exists but has yet to import many fandom types. Dreamwidth has the fandom types but it's so slow/dead I don't consider it a contender. I'm keeping an eye on bobaboard dev but like pillowfort I just don't think they'll be able to capture an initial audience large enough to snowball into a viable alternative.

You're not going to keep transfic writers out like that becaue they rarely ever acknowledge it as an AU, they think of it as 'headcanon' that can plausibly insert to canon as it is. As in, they see X male character in canon as being trans, and it doesn't matter if it's set in the past before they could even do a modern gender transition or if their childhood has been seen on-screen. And even if you put a blanket ban on trans headcanons you'll still get cuntboy. At this point it might as well be as unavoidable in slash fandom as futa is for yuri, unfortunately.

Ban or not there's no way you can enforce that on Tumblr without stirring up controversy. Once it gets out that a community doesn't allow trans content you're just going to get a bunch of callout posts and people joining the community to troll and spam their headcanons out of spite. It'll even dissuade people who don't care about trans stuff from joining because then they'll be associated with a transphobic community. The only thing you can do is do a "quiet" ban on it, i.e. establish a majority who don't like trans/cuntboy from the start with your friends or something and ignore anyone who posts stuff like that and they'll fuck off sooner or later from the lack of attention. Or make it a private community and vet people's blogs before letting them in without explicitly stating they're rejected for trans shit.

This is too nitpicky imo. AUs are wildly popular in fan spaces, regardless of how OOC they are, and it will do nothing to curb trannies. If you're going to try and curate a community that shares a philosophy of "don't like don't read," you can't also create such rigid rules. I agree with the other nonas who think it'd be most reasonable to just create a private community where you only allow in people you think would be a good fit. But honestly, I think you might struggle with finding a sizable community to begin with. Tumblr is dying as it is, and there aren't very many well-organized, old school fan blogs, much less impersonal ones with carefully selected desktop themes, no whole-setting AUs, no moralfag sensibilities, and no trannyshit. You're probably going to have to compromise on at least one or two of those things, and if it was me, I'd think the AU thing is the least important of them. If you're fine with a tiny community, of course, do whatever you like. Good luck either way, though.

I honestly don't really have a platform. 4chan would be closest, but it became lame, shit and riddled by SNS tards the last years. I never liked tumblr and cannot see how it would have gotten better. Casually posting my art there and talk to a few people that use it and all I see is infighting over "problematic" headcanons, posts and ships. Personally hate AU like that as well. The setting and premise are half of the reason for why I even care about a series, alternative routes/endings are something else. I guess it's impossible to ban that stuff but I wish there was a place like that since you cannot even filter it without also filtering "character survives" fics, it's sometimes enough to kill my motivation to even look for fics, since most of the series I am into are like 50% coffeeshop/school AU shit or more.

I remember liking Reverse Falls AU art a lot. I wished it had more Dipper Gleeful x Yellow Bill Cypher, though.

NTA and saged for off-topic, but I have never understood the appeal of AUs of that nature. Of course, it's fine for people to like what they do, but for some reason, when an AU diverges heavily from canon (I'm talking, like, a high fantasy series has an AU set in 1950s America or something), I cannot get into it. I like the characters for who they are, and changing the setting and their life experiences fundamentally turns them into different people entirely. I usually end up thinking, "you could've just changed the names of these characters, and I legitimately couldn't have identified them as the same people."

If you rely on specific tags and you want these tagged posts to be easy to find by others you should add these hashtags in your bio. Clicking on them will let people see all your tagged posts that way. Other than that I don't know what else to say. Make surr you select the right languages for your posts so the posts can appear in other people's TL or search pages, if you post in Japanese you'll have to pick that option.

Same. And I have the same issue with genderbending. I wonder if I perceive characters differently from others because it's soo common. Even when I go into a new space with good fujos who are 25+ and not gendies and such it usually starts fine but eventually they will always either genderbend or draw AU, it makes me insane.
Like there is sooo much to do with the setting we already have that nobody else has drawn yet or written about. Why can't we first do that?

Maybe anti isn't needed as >>6670 says but don't speak Japanese well so I also use English and I made the experience that a few fans grew vary of me when they found me but calmed down and followed after they learned that I accept all form of shippings in fanart. I later added the sign in the bio just to be sure, since some of them made had experiences with antis it seems. But if you only post in JP to begin with you don't need it. But add the fujo sign.
Technically saying that you're fujo should already include that you are against anti.

I despair at everything being so fragmented these days. And Discord killing all discussions that would have otherwise taken place on forums, blogs, image boards, Tumblr.

I saw it happen on Novel Updates forums. There were active discussions of the most popular danmei titles (sometimes spanning 100+ pages - FoD has more than 800 pages - https://www.novelupdatesforum.com/threads/the-founder-of-diabolism.32452 ), but all of it died down once people started posting Discord links and I assume most readers moved there.

Why not try posting on Twitter or on another social media to see if someone has a server they can invite you to?
As someone who tried to make a chill fujo server like 5+ years ago, it's basically impossible if you allow randoms in. It either gets too big to be comfy or there are annoying spergs. The only good servers ime are with friends or with friends of friends because you basically can vet/vouch for people better. You'll also have similar interests, ships, and fandoms rather than a free-for-all fujo server.
I know this goes against the idea of things being "open" and less fragmented, but sadly in this day and age, I've just accepted it.

I'm a bit saddened at how Discord is the predominant method of discussion now. I'm more of a lurker so I don't enjoy instant messaging and closed circles too much kek. I barely have any followers on twitter and the very few mutuals I have stopped using twitter at least a year ago. Honestly I'm assuming I'm shadowbanned because the only ones who interact with me sometimes are two very specific mutuals. One mutuals I often talked to was banned from twitter because she committed the heinous crime of… live tweeting an event and sometimes using relevant hashtags. Ever since Elon took over and changed a lot of things related to the search functions, the paid subscription, etc. I think my tweets are barely visible since then, while before I sometimes had likes and replies from people (not bots) who didn't follow me. I can't even talk about anything with my irl friends these days, some of them aren't fujoshi, some of them are just busy with life just as much as I am if not more, including a friend who gave birth to her first child a few months ago so she's really busy, some of them are chronically unemployed for reasons out of their control and I'm always worried I'll upset them by merely talking about buying things like books or cinema tickets, and almost none of them is online enough to keep up with our mutual hobbies, etc. I also have a hard time talking to people during conventions, especially when I go there alone and I noticed many fujoshi there are a lot younger than me and probably don't want to talk to someone who's 10 years older than them, which is understandable. The people I really got along with during conventions I went to when I was in my 20s also stopped being online altogether for various reasons. Pair that with what I said about twitter and right now my best places to talk about BL and hobbies in general is right here or sometimes on LC. It's like I'm too much of a normie for other fujoshi but too much of a nerd for everyone else.

But I recently joined a discord again since it's openly linked on reddit (I don't use reddit, but it's the only damn place that links discords). It has 303 users, so I thought "awesome!". Can deal with SFW if I have at least someone to sperg with. But guess what? The discord is DEAD, like all discords I ever find. 300+ people and only 4-5 are posting and of course there isn't a single artist among them. I refuse to be the only one posting their own art there and talking to myself so I left again.

As as long as discords have at least four good people it would be a step up. You can always create a NSFW channel with them once you befriend them. But it's impossible to even find them. ALL friends I make (if I ever find any) barely speak any of my languages. It's almost always east Asians, LATAMs, Russians or Iraqis. There is something wrong with the west. Or I simply don't share their taste. I have no idea.

Could this also be related to generations? I don't know how old you are but many of the Asian artists I follow on twitter post on a regular basis or became less active online recently and they're around my age or a little bit younger or older and I'm in my early 30s. It seems like in the west, both America and Europe, the most active fujoshi online are in their early 20s and fuck off from the internet once they graduate and get a fulltime job. Or maybe they move to other social media accounts without telling anyone.

I prefer discord over open platforms like twitter and bluesky cause on open platforms there's always the possibility that something will leave your intended audience and causes unwanted attention. I never participated in livejournal communities, let alone during their peak, but I imagine those communities were similarly less open.

As much as there's elements of the place that I really dislike, if anyone wants to try to make more fujo friends outside of this site it may be worth looking into the Citrus con discord when it's the time of year again. Naturally you'll have to tolerate the gendies but I imagine it's one of the more active fujo communities out there so if you're determined enough you may be able to find people you can get along with.

Me(late 30s)/my few fujo friends/the older EN fujos on my radar mostly just post works to the appropriate site (Ao3/pixiv) and don't have a social media presence on any of the larger platforms. Now that tumblr is dead it's actually a pretty calm place to be an older fujo. Bsky is protected by a powerful aura of millennial cringe so not a lot of young people/antis have set up shop there.

Yeah, I had the same ideas. I am also in my 30s and I noticed that Japanese (or Chinese) who are older than 25 are often still into it and drawing, whereas westerners mostly seem to have a fujo phase in their late teens and early 20s and lose interest afterwards. I follow quite many Asians where I know for a fact that they're older than 30 but I cannot remember a single other Westener like that. At least nobody from the US or central Europe.

I also get the feeling that western fans are very inconsistent even during their fujo phases. It's always switching from fujo to yume or from fujo to yuri to hetero to trans stuff and back or they display some mixed form of interest that is never really fujo because it intermingles with lesbian and trans preferences or yume. At least Japanese and the other non-Euros/Anglo-Americans I know seem much more straight-forward with their fujo behavior.

I've noticed that online but not irl. My fujo friends irl don't have an online presence at all so my guess is that it's the same for others for many reasons we already talked about. They're not pretending to be into yuri when they're not, and they're massive TRAs but don't seem to want that shit in their yaoi.

What you said also applies to the few very vocal fujoshi in my country. They're usually vocal because they're influencers and all know each other, but they also treat BL and slash as more of an LGBTQ+ representation genre. Some of them organize a yaoi/yuri convention once a year and sometimes take that opportunity to promote straight romance in their own fanzines/original stuff and through guests because ??? and then they attracted a more zoomer audience that's even more obsessed with trans headcanons and yuri and they keep arguing over the lack of representation of this and that. Or these zoomers accuse the organization of prioritizing BL and evil fetishizing straight women because most visitors are here for brand new official BL manga translations and for prints and fanzines of their favorite gay pairings instead of badly made trans porn art or disgusting pokemon bdsm porn iykyk which is out of the organizers' control. When you see them arguing over all of this and over BL online it's very obvious who's a millennial and who's a zoomer, it's pretty funny. Other of these oldfags are directly working with BL, either by creating a manhwa publishing company or by working in comicbook stores so it makes sense why they also post about it online no matter their age.

I sadly don't know any irl fujos either anymore. At some point we simply all drifted apart. Doesn't help that I am a hyperfix fag, so I have the urge to talk about the few specific anime/cartoons/games I am into and it's hard finding other fans IRL nowadays. Too much choice. In the 90s and 00s you could be sure that out of 10 fujos you would find 5 who were into one of the big ships like SefiKura or so. Now, with 60 anime airing every season and a billion games available on steam finding another fan is like hitting a jackpot.

Yeah that annoys me. I mean all is fine, but it's sad if BL places stopped being a thing. It's so annoying to follow someone for a BL ship only to have 60% of the posts being about 2D tumblr-style women because they have to balance every gay post with two lesbian or trans posts. It's especially weird when the men are drawn hot or at least on-character while the women then all have that tumblr look. Still don't know if they are truly bi and into that or if they like it because they think they HAVE to like it.
