Is there a crisis in fanfic? So many fanfics revolve around rote, unimaginative concepts ('coffee shop AU' being the poster child). Why would any author want to copy-paste the same formulas, not even trying to play with them (ex. the coffee shop burns down at the end of chapter 1 - now the characters are jobless and PLOT ENSUES). Are so many writers really struggling for ideas? I find it hard to believe.

>>6919I don't think it's an age thing. Back in my early fandom days there were lots of crack fics, wild crossover fics, parody fics, fics with the writer's self-insert being orbited by a harem of anime boys etc. It was self-indulgent, juvenile, often OOC, but fun to read.

The stock fanfic plot that endlessly repeats is 'character has crush on other character and spends entire fic angsting about it until they finally get together'. I'm at the point where all I want is fic about my ship doing their job with detail put into it that isn't just 'they do a lot of paperwork, coworkers give relationship advice, then porn or confession happens'. (They have never been shown doing paperwork but it's just an assumption fandom makes)
If I actually want plot focus I usually have to go into the stuff not tagged with ship, which is fine I guess, but sometimes I just wanna know that the relationship is established in the background.

When I was younger I used to be super into modern/college AUs, during quarantine I was obsessed with DDNE (including making "non-problematic" ships incest/having age gaps), and now I mostly enjoy canon compliant/divergent character studies.

If a series has a tragic ending (see: Alien Stage) I like reincarnation AUs over canon divergence because I still like consequences of what happened being dealt with, & them being in modern times and having pre-existing lives without each other is bittersweet. I also like "missing scenes" where let's say a timeskip happened or we were told and not shown an event that occurred, it's a ff detailing it.

However, when I write a pairing I tend not to return to them, there will not be another story for this ship from me. As such it's hard to reply, I try not to leave impersonal one-word replies like "Thanks" but I don't want to tell the person "Thank you, but I don't have any more planned," since that sounds dismissive and rude.
In the past when receiving requests to continue oneshots I've replied with "Thanks, maybe in the future." but that's just a lie. I don't know, there's definitely some self-consciousness over disappointing strangers on the internet.

Not sure if this is the right thead for this, and this is extremely petty, but does anyone else get disappointed when they receive a nice comment on their fic, only to see that the commenter also praised a fic that is, quite frankly, complete trash and OOC? It kind of makes me feel like their opinion of my fic has no credibility anymore kek. I don't even know how to respond to this comment. I was excited at first, but now I feel like their words have no value to me, even if it was all positive feedback.

Although since I got the site skin to hide fics based on tag, I can somewhat safely do this again because those fics will just not appear anymore. I also stopped looking through the bookmarks of people who fave my work on Pixiv because some of the stuff that people are willing to publicly show others is insane to me, not that I don't admire the balls but I could never. I think some of you are thinking too hard about it, people enjoy fast food & gourmet food for different reasons. Maybe the other fic had a specific fetish they enjoyed or they thought it was good for erotica but liked your fic for less superficial reasons and the actual characterization. I don't think having trash taste doesn't mean they can't enjoy good stuff sometimes, esp when (imo) a lot of fanfic is not the greatest so when entering it you have to subconsciously keep that in mind.

There's only so many good fics you can find of a specific ship or theme and sometimes you don't want a big multichapter saga to get to the one trope you want. I've had fandoms where I was far more forgiving of poor quality prose because it presented some interesting what if scenarios that admittedly stretched canon quite thin, but that was rather the point since it couldn't happen under any other circumstances.
