i imagine there’s less competition for women-targeted manga so it is actually making them good money. bigger publishers already have control over the popular shounens so it’s easier to simply appeal to a niche. it’s sad that no matter how much women support a series or company, the male executives just see them as stepping stools to reach a male audience. not all of course but most.

Interesting. It's too bad they couldn't adapt it completely, but that's the nature of manga adaptations like you said. At least they added other details to make it a different experience for the fans that end up reading it.

Finally finished "watching" Ai No Kusabi, more accurately skipping through it because it's just not for me story wise. The visuals were nice though and it makes me sad that anime could never look like that again. It's a lost art. The sex scenes were nice, wish they weren't censored.

NTA but Harada made a comment in the past about how she at first felt BL as a genre was limiting but then learned to do it in a free-for-all style where she could practically tell any story she wanted. And I get it, in BL you still have to have some kind of a boys love romance thread running through the story. She's also fiercely protective of her artistic vision and literally quit Libre publishing due to them using her work without permission (they published one of her doujins without her permission and edited the content) and switched over to QPA which was a massive gamble but paid off in the end. So she comes off as someone who has a clear artistic vision and doesn't like being boxed in one genre, so I can understand her desire to try telling other kinds of stories than those about relationships. I would imagine her seinen series being an experiment to her, and I think it's admirable that she's not doing it under a different name but the same handle that she has kept since her smutty Gintama doujins kek.

In her case, it seems more like a reflection on what publishers expected the genre to be based on their readership. Like >>7456 said, she's happy to have control over her work currently, but I can see why she'd try a story that isn't restricted by the label of being 'BL' even if it has all the elements.

You're not wrong nona, but it is funny that most of your examples are rather old series, Banban aside. The others I can think of are typically marketed as shoujo or josei (Silver Diamond, Count Cain, CLAMP works) rather than explicitly BL, which kind of points out the problems the genre has from an industry standpoint. I've seen webtoon authors complain similarly that most publishers want you to have something explicit early to grab attention.

That was a thing in the past, but I think seinen is much more receptive to BL elements these days. I'm thinking specifically of Golden Kamuy. Even Tagame started publishing BL in seinen magazines.

I finally watched 10Dance and I have NEVER felt more blueballed by an ending. Everything else about the movie was immaculate, down to the lighting, cinematography, and actors. Why couldn't they make an original end for it instead? I wanted to see them retire in Havanna full of passion and life. If not that, I would have settled for some kind of flash forward to the competition at least.

Props to Ryoma and Keita for selling the mutual longing and pining so well. I could watch them for another 5 hours easily.

Most manga lacks the texture her work has and the 50s Showa era theme is interesting. Plus I'm a sucker for age gap & uniforms. She doesn't seem to make doujins though unfortunately so it'll probably never happen

The only mermen BL I know is a Western one kek, I feel like I'm not as familiar with the diversity of JP BL since a lot of different genres/settings I can more easily think of Western examples than JP ones.

It's a fun Jackie Chan movie from the 80s where he's in the navy and fights pirates. Its silly but good, and is my kneejerk association for late 1800s Chinese maritime settings.
